Who We Are

The Correction Captains’ Association (CCA) is the official union representing 600-plus Captains working for the New York City Department of Correction. The CCA was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1959 when the only facilities were Rikers Island, the Tombs, and the Court pens.

Today, in addition to Rikers, our members work in all of the New York City Court facilities (Supreme, Criminal, Family), Bellevue Hospital prison ward, support units on Rikers (Special Operations, Transportation, Industries including a laundry and bakery, Emergency Services Unit, Communications, Headquarters), and at the Training Academy.

The Department of Correction, as a distinct entity, dates back to 1895, when the Department of Public Charities and Correction was split into separate agencies - the Department of Public Charities, with jurisdiction over the City's hospitals and almshouses, and the Department of Correction.

The CCA is one of three DOC unions, with the other two being the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association, and the Assistant Deputy Wardens/Deputy Wardens Association.
